    Absorption Systems In Radio-Selected QSO Surveys

    Radio-selected samples of quasars with complete optical identifications offer an ideal dataset with which to investigate dust bias associated with intervening absorption systems. Here, we review our work on the Complete Optical and Radio Absorption Line System (CORALS) survey whose aim is to quantify this bias and assess the impact of dust on absorber statistics. First, we review previously published results on the number density and gas content of high column density absorbers over the redshift range 0.6 < z < 3.5. We then present the latest results from CORALS which focus on measuring the metal content of our unbiased absorber sample and an investigation of their optical--IR colours. Overall we find that although dust is unarguably present in absorption galaxies, the level appears to be low enough that the statistics of previous magnitude limited samples have not been severely affected and that the subsequent reddening of background QSOs is small.Comment: Proceedings of IAUC199, Probing Galaxies through Quasar Absorption Lines, P.     Electronic ticketing systems as a mechanism for travel behaviour change? Evidence from Sydney’s Opal Card

    Smartcard and other forms of electronic ticketing have become integral to modern public transport systems. While aggregate ridership figures have generally been positive, little is known about the drivers behind these changes because of a lack of travel information on individuals before and after implementation of such systems. This working paper presents analysis from a naturalistic travel behaviour study of inner-city Sydney residents that coincided with the phased introduction of the Opal smartcard system. Using a differences-in-differences methodology, results indicate significant reductions in car use of around 10 minutes/day with commensurate increases in train use and incidental walking. This trend holds across income groups and is more pronounced for older residents. Results add further weight to the merits of simplifying ticket purchasing as part of a package of policy measures designed to increase public transport usage

    The Optical - Infrared Colors of CORALS QSOs: Searching for Dust Reddening Associated With High Redshift Damped Lyman Alpha Systems

    The presence of dust in quasar absorbers, such as damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems, may cause the background QSO to appear reddened. We investigate the extent of this potential reddening by comparing the optical-to-infrared (IR) colors of QSOs with and without intervening absorbers. Our QSO sample is based on the Complete Optical and Radio Absorption Line System (CORALS) survey of Ellison et al (2001). We have obtained near-simultaneous B and K band magnitudes for subset of the CORALS sample and supplemented our observations with further measurements published in the literature. To account for redshift-related color changes, the B-K colors are normalized using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) QSO composite. The mean normalized B-K color of the DLA sub-sample is +0.12, whereas the mean for the no-DLA sample is -0.10; both distributions have RMS scatters ~0.5. Neither a student's T-test nor a KS test indicate that there is any significant difference between the two color distributions. Based on simulations which redden the colors of QSOs with intervening DLAs, we determine a reddening limit which corresponds to E(B-V) < 0.04 (SMC-like extinction) at 99% confidence (3 sigma), assuming that E(B-V) is the same for all DLAs. Finally, we do not find any general correlation between absorber properties (such as [Fe/Zn] or neutral hydrogen column density) and B-K color. One of these two QSOs shows evidence for strong associated absorption from X-ray observations, an alternative explanation for its very red color. We conclude that the presence of intervening galaxies causes a minimal reddening of the background QSO.Comment: Accepted for publication in A

    Reconstitution of recombinant human replication factor C (RFC) and identification of an RFC subcomplex possessing DNA-dependent ATPase activity

    Replication factor C (RFC) is a five-subunit protein complex required for coordinate leading and lagging strand DNA synthesis during S phase and DNA repair in eukaryotic cells. It functions to load the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a processivity factor for polymerases delta and epsilon, onto primed DNA templates. This process, which is ATP-dependent, is carried out by 1) recognition of the primer terminus by RFC () binding to and disruption of the PCNA trimer, and then 3) topologically linking the PCNA to the DNA. In this report, we describe the purification and properties of recombinant human RFC expressed in Sf9 cells from baculovirus expression vectors. Like native RFC derived from 293 cells, recombinant RFC was found to support SV40 DNA synthesis and polymerase delta DNA synthesis in vitro and to possess an ATPase activity that was highly stimulated by DNA and further augmented by PCNA. Assembly of RFC was observed to involve distinct subunit interactions in which both the 36- and 38-kDa subunits interacted with the 37-kDa subunit, and the 40-kDa subunit interacted with the 36-kDa subunit-37-kDa subunit subcomplex. The 140-kDa subunit was found to require interactions primarily with the 38- and 40-kDa subunits for incorporation into the complex. In addition, a stable subcomplex lacking the 140-kDa subunit, although defective for DNA replication, was found to possess DNA-dependent ATPase activity that was not responsive to the addition of PCNA

    Development of an online diary for longitudinal travel / activity surveys

    Motivated by the continued search for methods to reduce participant burden and non-response, and improve the quality of travel data, this paper details the development of a new online travel/activity diary to support a major longitudinal investigation of travel in Sydney, Australia. The diary employs several innovative features designed to simplify the process of data entry, and improve participant recall and completeness of travel, including auto-fills, prompts, trip editing capabilities, favourite trips and a dragand- drop technique for capturing travel mode. An additional innovation is the ability to view a GPS-based Google map of daily travel while completing the diary to assist with recall. The diary is tested on 37 participants, with a range of diagnostics provided to assess their comprehension and interaction with the diary, reaction and burden, and completeness of data provided. Overall, 89% of participants complete all seven days of the diary with 75% indicating no issues once they become accustomed to how it works. Trip entry times average around two minutes/trip with three-quarters of trips entered within 24 hours of being made and 96% of trips provided with complete details. In terms of the GPS component, while the data itself is of variable quality and the optional viewing of trips is lower than anticipated, those carrying a GPS report more trips/day and segments/day, fewer missing days, and provide more complete trip data

    Speeding in urban environments: Are the time savings worth the risk?

    Perceived time savings by travelling faster is often cited as a motivation for drivers’ speeding behaviour. These time savings, however, come at a cost of significant road injuries and fatalities. While it is known that drivers tend to overestimate the time savings attributable to speeding there is little empirical evidence on how much time drivers genuinely save during day-to-day urban driving and how this relates to speeding-related crashes. The current paper reports on a study to address the lack of empirical evidence on this issue using naturalistic driving data collected from 106 drivers over a period of five weeks. The results show that the average driver saves 26 seconds per day or two minutes per week by speeding. More importantly, the cost of these time savings is one fatality for every 18,947 hours saved by the population on 100 km/h roads and one injury for every 1,407 hours saved on the same roads. Full speed compliance – and consequently a dramatic reduction in the road toll – could be achieved through almost imperceptible increases in travel time by each driver
